Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian novelty silver paper clips were functional writing desk accessories produced during the late nineteenth century. Often crafted in the shape of flora, fauna, or whimsical figures, these items utilized internal spring mechanisms to secure correspondence, notes, and documents on an executive or writing desk.

These desk accessories were predominantly constructed from sterling silver or silver plate, frequently incorporating repousse, chasing, or pierced filigree detail. A steel spring mechanism was typically embedded within the hinge structure to provide tension, and some examples were weighted with lead or leather bases.

Authentic British pieces bear official assay hallmarks, including a makers mark, purity mark (such as the lion passant for sterling silver), town mark, and date letter. Additionally, genuine late Victorian clips display hand-finished detailing, proper historical spring joinery, and natural signs of minor wear around mechanical joints.

An antique silver clip functions effectively on a modern office desk, home study console, or library writing table. It can be positioned atop a stack of vintage books, used to hold stationary on a leather blotter, or displayed inside a glass cabinet alongside other period collectables.

Clean silver desk accessories using a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish without stripping deep patination from recessed areas. Avoid immersing the piece in liquid cleaning solutions, as moisture can rust the steel spring mechanism inside the hinge.
