Victorian Silver Double Stamp Trough Box

19th century
Description

A good example of an antique silver double stamp box. It is in the form of a trough with two hinged lidded compartments either side of a central space. It stands on four curved feet and is engraved with initials "MSE".

It is hallmarked for Chester, James Deakin, 1885 although the marks are slightly rubbed.

It is in good condition for its age. There are some signs of age and use and a few small dinks and dents (one particular dent on the side that has been photographed) and some faint surface marks but overall it displays well. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Following the introduction of the Penny Black and standardized prepaid postage in 1840, specialized desktop boxes were crafted to hold adhesive postage stamps. By the late Victorian period, silversmiths produced double and triple stamp troughs with slanted interiors to keep stamps organized and accessible.

Victorian stamp troughs were predominantly fashioned from sterling silver or silver plate, featuring cast decorative feet, hinged frames, and glass or silver lids. The interiors frequently contain angled wooden or metal slopes designed to elevate the stamps for easy retrieval.

Authentic pieces generally display official British silver hallmarks or maker marks alongside British Registration Design numbers (Rd No). Look for period-appropriate hand-engraving, solder lines along the joinery, and wear consistent with historic desktop use.

A silver stamp trough serves as an elegant accent on a contemporary writing desk, study console, or library bookshelf. It can be paired with antique leather-bound books, brass desk instruments, or modern stationery to add historic texture.

Clean silver components using a soft microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish, taking care to avoid harsh chemicals near glass inserts. Store the item away from high humidity to prevent accelerated tarnish and oxidisation.
