Edwardian Silver Mounted Double Stamp Box

1900 - 1920
Description

A good example of an Edwardian double stamp box with a solid silver frame and leather base. It is a sloped design to make the stamps easier to access and the lid has a half penny and one penny stamp within the frames.

It is clearly hallmarked for Birmingham, 1902 and E.S.Barnsley & Co.

It is in good condition for its age. There are no major damages and it displays well. The are signs of age and use and some wear and minor losses to the leather around the corners and edges and some faint surface marks on the silver frame but nothing detrimental. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Stamp boxes became prominent desk accessories during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods following the widespread use of adhesive postage stamps. Silversmiths produced specialised containers in sterling silver to store single or multiple stamp denominations neatly on writing tables.

These boxes typically feature sterling silver lids or casings fitted over bases made from dark hardwoods, leather, or slate. The top lids frequently incorporate glass panels to protect and display sample postage stamps.

Authentic British pieces bear official assay hallmarks, including the lion passant mark for sterling silver, a town mark, a date letter corresponding to the Edwardian era (19011910), and a registered makers mark.

This functional object can be placed on an office desk, coffee table tray, or bookshelf to add historical detail. It serves as an accent piece within traditional, vintage, or eclectic interior schemes.

Silver elements should be polished gently using a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver polish. Direct immersion in water must be avoided to prevent damage to internal linings, glass seals, or paper stamps.
