Description

By the end of the 19th century, the nomadic Turkmen tribesof Central Asia had begun to settle in towns and villages, and their weavings show the influence of the local urban designs. This lovely bagface is of type known as a 'torba' and was produced by the weavers of the Ersari tribe, one of the larger of the Turkmen tribes who migrated in modern Central Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. This torba was probably woven in the region of Beshir, Uzbekistan where there was a rich local tradition of silk and ikat production. The design of this field is clearly inspired by silk ikats but it has retained the latchhook guls and geometric borders associated with the Turkmen. The design has been executed in an elegant way. It has very nice soft wool, lovely dyes including a deep bottle green, and is in excellent condition. There are indications on the back that it may have been hung up on the wall in recent times. Professionally cleaned.

A Turkmen storage bagface, frequently known as a torba or chuval panel, is the decorated front section of a woven nomadic bag traditionally crafted by Central Asian tribes for transport and domestic storage.

These textiles are hand-woven using hand-spun sheep wool for both warp and weft, dyed using natural plant and mineral dyes to produce deep terracotta, madder red, and dark navy shades.
