Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Bacchanalian bronze sculpture groups depict classical scenes associated with Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and celebration, frequently featuring dancing maidens, satyrs, and putti. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries across Europe, these Classical revival works emphasise narrative composition, movement, and anatomical characterisation.

Nineteenth-century bronze sculptures were crafted using either the lost-wax process or sand casting methods. Once cast, artisans hand-chased the surface to refine drapery and texture before applying chemical patination to achieve uniform brown or dark tones.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit hand-chased surface details, precise seam finishing, and natural patination wear at raised contact points. Castings from this era are heavy and may feature founder stamps, cold-stamps, or foundry marks around the base.

Position a patinated bronze sculpture on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or within an illuminated bookshelf alcove to serve as a visual anchor. Setting dark bronze against light stone, painted panelling, or natural timber creates strong sculptural contrast.

Remove surface dust using a dry, soft-bristled brush or clean microfibre cloth. Protect the patinated finish by applying a thin layer of neutral microcrystalline wax annually and buffing gently, avoiding chemical cleansers or abrasive polishes.
