Settle benches originated in medieval times and became commonplace in British public houses and farmhouses during the 17th and 18th centuries, designed with high panelled backs to block cold draughts from stone floors.

Authentic period settles were predominantly constructed from native British timbers such as oak, elm, ash, and frequently softer commercial woods like pine, depending on the region and the makers budget.

Authentication relies on examining hand-cut joints, original tool marks, timber shrinkage patterns, iron or wooden peg fixings, and the natural patination or wear consistent with age rather than artificial distressing.

A high-backed settle functions effectively in an entrance hall or against a plain wall in an open-plan kitchen, paired with neutral textiles or sheepskins to soften the architectural timber presence.

Preservation involves dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and moisture fluctuations to protect the painted finish, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax if untreated.
