Description

Dating around 1900-1910 this stunning antique Kazak rug has wonderful rich reds and deep blues, combined with pale blues, rare greens and soft pinks.  Remarkable high wool pile all over, a truly stunning, collectable Caucasian Kazak. Coming from the highlands in Azerbaijan, these antique rugs are famous for their soft wool, bold geometric designs and vibrant colours.

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.  Depending on the weave some Kazak rugs can be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation.

Kazak rugs were woven by nomadic and village weavers in the Caucasus region throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are celebrated for their bold geometric compositions, large-scale central medallions, and saturated colours derived from natural plant dyes.

Authentic Kazak rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile tied onto a durable wool warp and weft foundation. The thick pile and coarse knot density create a plush, resilient textile designed for daily utility in cold climate environments.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye abrash (subtle colour variations), and asymmetric geometric motifs. The reverse side displays visible, slightly irregular hand-knotted structures rather than machine-uniform gridwork.
