Size: 8ft 8in x 4ft 1in (264 x 125cm).

Antique Caucasian Kazak long rug of early date.

Circa 1860.

An excellent example of an early Kazak long rug, the three medallions are drawn with a freedom not found in later examples. Excellent soft glossy wool with superb colour including a very nice green.

Excellent condition with slight even wear and good long pile, the ends have been over bound and there are a few scattered replacement knots.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Kazak rugs are nomadic tribal textiles originating from the Caucasus region, hand-knotted by weavers during the nineteenth century and earlier. They are recognised for their bold geometric compositions, large-scale medallions, and rich primary colour schemes.

Traditional Kazak rugs were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation. The yarn was coloured using natural plant and mineral dyes to produce durable, saturated tones.

Authentic pieces exhibit double-knot construction on a wool foundation, slightly irregular geometric symmetry inherent to tribal weaving, and natural dye colour variations known as abrash. The back of the rug shows distinct hand-knotted texture rather than uniform machine backing.

Long tribal rugs serve to delineate spaces such as hallways, foyers, or narrow living areas. The bold geometric patterns anchor contemporary minimalist furnishings or complement traditional timber panelling and antique furniture.
