Antique Kazak Rug

19th century
Description

Antique Kazak rug with a vivid red background with a soft blue border, a striking Caucasian Karachoff rug which has an unmistakeable design. Woven with lots of interest, look for the people and animals in the design.  Woven by Armenian weavers in the mountains of the Caucasus, they are full of interesting motifs, often the rectangular medallion design as we see here.  With four rams horn style box motifs, full of stars and rosette motifs (often seen in Talish weavings.) The natural dyes have faded, yet retained their beauty and create a collectable and exciting 140 year old Caucasian rug.

Condition is very good, with a soft wool and medium pile height.  Fringes are original and sides are too in lots of areas, some preservation restoration to the sides to secure them has been completeted, plus minimal repair work in the main field of the rug.  A really wonderful example.

Rugs bearing the name Kazak come from the highland area of the Caucasus in Azerbaijan whose centre is the town of Kazak. Woven by semi-nomadic shepherds of the region. They use fabulous vegetable dyes and high quality hand spun wool from their own herd.  Depending on the weave some Kazak rugs can be extremely soft to handle as the wool is light and woven on a supple foundation.

We offer the service of viewing any of our antique rugs in situ or at our barn showroom by appoint.  Please request a home visit to view this exceptional antique rug at home soon, or contact us for more info.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Kazak rugs originate from the Caucasus region and are recognised for their bold geometric patterns, thick wool pile construction, and saturated natural dyes, predominantly featuring deep reds, blues, and ivory tones.

Traditionally, Kazak rugs are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation, resulting in a durable and heavy textile.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted wool construction, subtle colour variations in the dye known as abrash, geometric or zoomorphic motifs, and a flexible wool backing with visible knot structures.

A Kazak rug serves as a foundational element in neutral room schemes, pairing effectively with dark timber furniture, leather upholstery, or modern minimalist pieces to create visual contrast.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, rotate the rug annually to ensure uniform wear, and address spills immediately by blotting with a clean, damp cloth rather than rubbing.
