Antique Caucasian Fachralo Kazak prayer rug with outstanding colour and condition.

Circa 1880.

A beautifully drawn rug with excellent clear colours, there are two green diamond shaped medallions in green on a clear red field. The border is beautifully drawn and of a classic design for this group of rugs.

The rug is in excellent condition with slight even wear and good pile, there is some corrosion to the browns.

Hand washed and ready for use or display.

Fachralo Kazak rugs originated in the south-western region of the Caucasus during the nineteenth century. Woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes, these textiles were created for both daily household use and devotional purposes, distinguished by their bold geometric designs and rich natural dyes.

Traditional Caucasian prayer rugs are constructed using hand-spun local wool for both the pile and the foundation warps and wefts. The vibrant red, blue, green, and yellow tones were derived from natural vegetable and mineral dyes, such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic pieces exhibit a thick, soft wool pile on a heavy wool warp and weft foundation, often featuring depressed warps. Design characteristics include a distinct prayer arch or mihrab shape at one end, central diamond or stepped medallions, and geometric latch-hook motifs.
