Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries, writing slopes were portable boxes designed for travelers and army officers to draft letters while away from home. When opened, the box unfolds into an angled surface, providing storage underneath for inkwells, quill pens, and correspondence.

Writing slopes were constructed from hard-wearing timbers such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood. Brass strapping, corner mounts, and flush handles were added to reinforce the wooden frame during travel, whilst interiors were typically lined with baize or embossed leather.

Authentic period writing slopes showcase hand-cut dovetail joints, flush brass fittings set directly into the wood, and original steel or brass locks. Natural signs of age include slight shrinkage in the timber, uneven wear on the base, and an aged patina on the metalwork.

A writing slope can be placed closed on a modern office desk, console table, or sideboard as a functional decorative object. Alternatively, it can be styled open on a coffee table or bookshelf to display vintage stationery and pens.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp environments to prevent the wood from warping or splitting. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain of the wood, and clean the brass accents gently with a soft cloth without harsh chemicals.
