Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Writing slopes became popular in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as portable writing desks for travel and correspondence. During the Victorian era, craftsmen built these boxes with interior compartments for inkwells, pens, and paper, often finishing the exterior in decorative wood veneers like burr walnut.

Cabinetmakers primarily constructed these boxes using solid timbers such as mahogany or oak, overlaid with decorative veneers like burr walnut, rosewood, or coromandel. Interior fittings frequently incorporated brass hinges, lock mechanisms, leather writing surfaces, and glass inkwells.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass escutcheons, and period-correct locks. Look for natural age wear on the base, minor shrinkage cracks in the veneer, and hand-finished interior compartments.

Place the writing box closed on a modern home office desk, console table, or library shelf as a textured decorative accent. It can also remain slightly open on a coffee table or sideboard to display internal leather folding slopes and brass fittings.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying or lifting. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain to nourish the timber and protect the brass fittings from heavy oxidisation.
