Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A writing slope, also known as a lap desk, is a portable wooden box featuring a hinged interior that unfolds into a sloped surface for writing letters away from a stationary desk. Popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, these boxes contained fitted compartments for inkwells, quills, paper, and correspondence.

Victorian writing slopes were crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently reinforced with brass binding around the corners and edges to prevent damage during transport. The interior surfaces were usually lined with velvet or skiver leather alongside brass hinges and spring catches.

Authentic Victorian writing slopes display hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass strapping secured with pins or countersunk screws, and natural oxidisation on the metalwork. Authentic examples also feature original brass mortise locks, matching key escutcheons, and concealed drawers released by internal spring mechanisms.

A writing slope can be positioned closed or open on an office desk, console table, or sideboard top as a decorative focal point. It serves as storage for stationery, keys, and modern desk accessories within a study, hallway, or living space.

Position the writing slope away from direct sunlight, central heating units, and damp environments to avoid wood shrinkage or veneer lift. Condition the timber using beeswax polish applied along the grain, and clean metal fittings with a soft cloth to maintain the original patina.
