Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A writing slope, also known as a lap desk, is a portable wooden box designed with an angled writing surface that opens up to store inkwells, pens, and correspondence. Popular from the late 18th through the 19th century, these boxes allowed individuals to write letters while travelling or away from a traditional desk.

Victorian writing slopes were typically crafted from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, rosewood, or exotic coromandel wood. The interior often featured leather or velvet writing surfaces, secret compartments, brass hinges, and mother-of-pearl or brass escutcheons for added security and decoration.

Authentic mid-19th-century writing slopes frequently display maker marks or stamped locks from notable workshops, along with hand-cut dovetail joinery and original brass fittings. Natural patination on the wood, slight shrinkage lines, and original lock mechanisms further indicate authenticity.

An antique writing slope functions effectively as a decorative accent placed atop an office desk, console table, or sideboard. It serves both as a focal point in a study or library setting and as a functional storage container for small personal keepsakes.

Coromandel wood should be kept away from direct sunlight, central heating vents, and high humidity to prevent drying or cracking. Regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and an occasional application of high-quality beeswax polish preserves the natural lustre of the wood.
