Description

A fine coromandel dome top 19th century writing slope by Mechi & Bazin. A superb little box with a patent Mordan & Co. lock, original glass and brass topped inkwells, the whole desk tidy compartment lined with original leather lining, a satinwood interior, original moire silk lining and still retaining its original velvet base.

A superb collectors item.

A Victorian writing slope is a wooden box with a sloped lid that unfolds to form an angled writing surface. Designed during the nineteenth century, these portable boxes stored inkwells, pens, paper, and correspondence for individuals on the move.

These boxes were constructed from solid hardwoods or timber frames covered in veneers such as coromandel, mahogany, walnut, or rosewood. Internal writing surfaces were lined with velvet or skiver leather, while exterior fittings featured brass or mother-of-pearl.

Authentic pieces often feature maker plates or embossed stamps from established firms, such as Mechi & Bazin on the lock plate or interior rim. Other indicators include hand-cut dovetail joints, period lock mechanisms, and original brass hardware.

A writing slope can be styled closed on an office desk, library table, or console as a decorative focal point. It can also be displayed open on a sideboard to show the internal leather writing surface and stationery compartments.
