Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror designed to be placed on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier. Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors were used to reflect ambient light into rooms and add architectural visual height.

Victorian gilt frames were typically constructed using a timber core moulded with gesso, a plaster-like material used to create intricate floral and scrolled detailing. The surface was then finished with gold leaf application, paired with heavy plate mirror glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine cracking in the gesso surface, known as craquelure, alongside natural wear where the red or grey clay bole undercoating shows through the gold leaf. The reverse typically features hand-cut wooden backing boards and original iron fixings.

In modern interiors, a tall gilt mirror can be placed above a minimalist hallway console table or mounted on a narrow accent wall to create visual contrast. The gold tone complements both neutral paint palettes and deep, bold wall colours.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned exclusively with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or duster to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Water and chemical cleaners must be avoided on the frame, while glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror surface.
