Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French marriage mirror, or glace de mariage, is a carved giltwood mirror traditionally commissioned as a wedding gift in 18th and 19th century France. These mirrors feature symbolic carvings on the crest, such as doves, burning torches, and floral garlands, representing fidelity, love, and fertility.

18th-century French mirrors were typically hand-carved from lime, pine, or oak, coated with layers of gesso, and finished using water gilding with fine gold leaf. The reflective glass was silvered using a mercury-tin amalgam, resulting in a distinct visual depth and soft sparkle.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, plaster cracking known as craquelure along the gesso, and uneven wear to the gold leaf where reddish clay bole shows through. Additionally, period mirror glass usually displays minor oxidation spots, slight distortion, and a wooden backplate fastened with hand-forged nails.

A carved giltwood mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a modern console, fireplace, or vanity unit. Pairing historic gold leaf detailing with simple, clean-lined contemporary furniture creates a balanced contrast that elevates minimalist rooms.

Clean water-gilded frames using only a soft, dry feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve traditional gesso and gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the mirror to prevent moisture from seeping into the wooden rebate.
