Impressive 19thc Gilt Mirror

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

This is certainly an impressive mirror. The detail is good and it has very little damage for a detailed item like this over the number of years in its life. It has had some refinishing in the past and is in good condition and with good colour. The moulds are nice and deep and offer a clean finish. The mirror glass itself appears original and has a little reassuring wear but is totally useable. All in all a great example at a very sensible price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rococo Revival mirrors from the 19th century are defined by fluid curves, C-scrolls, acanthus leaf motifs, and prominent crestings. These frames were heavily gilded to reflect ambient lighting, serving as major decorative focal points in formal reception rooms.

Frames were typically constructed from carved softwood or hardwood coated with layers of gesso plaster. Gold leaf was subsequently applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over a coloured clay bole foundation.

Authentic period pieces display age-related characteristics such as fine cracking in the gesso, known as craquelure, and wear to the gilding that reveals the underlying bole clay. Original mirror glass often exhibits mild foxing or dark spot oxidisation.

A gilded period mirror can be mounted above a contemporary sideboard or minimalist fireplace to create visual texture and contrast. Positioning ornate gold frames against neutral or deep wall paint accents the sculptural detail of the mouldings.

Gilded surfaces are sensitive to moisture and chemical cleaners, which can dissolve the original gesso and gold leaf. The frame should be dusted gently with a dry, soft brush, while glass cleaner should be applied carefully to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the glass.
