Louis XVI style mirrors are defined by Neoclassical symmetry, featuring straight lines, oval or rectangular frames, and classical motifs such as bow-tied ribbons, beaded borders, and laurel wreaths. Developed in late eighteenth-century France, these frames were finished with fine gold leaf over carved wood and gesso.

Traditional giltwood frames were constructed from pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gessoa mixture of glue size and chalkand smooth clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before being burnished with an agate stone.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit age-related signs such as subtle cracking (craquelure) in the gesso, wearing of the gold leaf revealing the red or yellow clay bole underneath, and natural dark spotting or foxing on the silvered glass backing.
