Adam style mirrors originate from the 18th-century Neoclassical designs of Robert Adam, characterised by symmetrical forms, delicate scrollwork, classical urn finials, and refined floral motifs.

These mirrors were constructed using carved wooden frames coated with gesso, a plaster-based compound, allowing for intricate moulded detailing before gold leaf was applied to the surface.

Look for age-appropriate wear to the gilding, evidence of hand-carved wood beneath damaged gesso, original fixings on the reverse, and light natural oxidisation on the mirror glass.

An Adam style giltwood mirror works well hung above a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned over a dining room sideboard, or placed in a hallway to reflect light.
