Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French gilt mirrors are defined by intricate carved ornamentation, frequently incorporating Rococo elements such as acanthus leaves, floral sprays, shell cartouches, and scrolls. Frames from this period were predominantly constructed from wood and gesso, finished with gold leaf gilding, and fitted with bevelled mirror glass.

Traditional gilt frames were constructed using a hand-carved timber substrate coated with layers of gesso, a mixture of chalk and animal glue. Detailed relief work was moulded or carved into the gesso before water gilding or oil gilding was applied using thin sheets of real gold leaf.

Authentic pieces typically display solid timber backboards, evidence of natural craquelure within the gesso layer, and subtle wear to the gold leaf showing red or grey clay bole underneath. Hand-bevelled glass plates from this period often feature slight optical distortions and irregular bevel borders.

Positioning a gilded oval mirror above a simple contemporary console table or fireplace mantel creates a balanced visual contrast between classical ornamentation and clean architectural lines. Hanging the mirror opposite a window maximises natural light reflection across the room.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry feather duster or brush, avoiding moisture or liquid chemical cleaners which dissolve gesso and remove delicate gold leaf. Maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent the underlying wood from expanding and cracking the gilded surface.
