Louis XVI style mirrors are characterised by Neoclassical symmetry, geometric oval or rectangular frames, and classical decorative crests such as ribbon bows, quivers of arrows, torches, and foliate garlands.

These mirrors are constructed using hand-carved timber or moulded gesso over a wooden frame, finished with water or oil gilding where thin sheets of gold leaf are applied over a bole clay base.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved wood backing boards, square-headed iron nails, visible red or yellow bole clay under worn gilding, and natural silvering degradation or foxing on the glass plate.
