Originating in England during the early 18th century, Windsor chairs evolved as utilitarian country furniture. High-back designs became popular for their ergonomic support and draught prevention in traditional homes, often crafted by regional wheelwrights and bodgers using localized timber.

Windsor chairs feature a solid wooden seat into which the legs and back spindles are socketed with round tenons. Construction frequently combines bent native woods such as yew or ash for the bows with elm for the solid saddle seat and turned beech or yew for the legs.

Authentic 19th-century examples display characteristic rich figure and reddish-amber colour distinctive to yew wood, hand-carved shaped seats, wedged tenon joinery visible on the top of the bow, and natural wear patterns on the front stretchers and armrests.
