The canterbury originated in late 18th-century England as a small stand designed to hold sheet music, folios, and later periodicals, taking its name from the Archbishop of Canterbury who reportedly commissioned the first design.

They are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, featuring joined partition slats, turned legs, and frequently incorporating brass castors for mobility.

Authenticity is determined by examining joint construction methods, timber grain oxidation, hand-turned elements, and appropriate wear consistent with nineteenth-century hand-tool manufacturing.

Positioned alongside a sofa or armchair, it functions practically as a magazine rack or record holder while adding historical warmth and architectural texture to a modern room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the polished surface.
