Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British sporting art gained prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing on field sports, working horses, and countryside scenes. Artists prioritised anatomical accuracy and landscape atmosphere to document rural heritage and agricultural life.

Antique oil paintings typically feature oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen canvas, cotton duck, or solid wood panels. These canvases are commonly presented within hand-carved or moulded timber frames finished in leaf gilding.

Authenticity can be evaluated by inspecting surface craquelure, natural paint aging, signature details, and period-appropriate stretcher construction. Examining the reverse of the canvas for historical canvas marks or framers labels also provides verification.

Position an equestrian painting as a focal accent above a stone mantelpiece or dark wood sideboard. Combining traditional figurative art with modern minimalist furnishings creates an intriguing contrast within classic and modern homes alike.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent paint cracking or canvas distortion. Gently wipe the frame and canvas using a soft feather duster, avoiding chemical cleaners and liquids without professional conservation advice.
