fine 19th century oil painting on canvas depicting a Mail coach outside the Swan Inn, in the snow, signed, inscribed and dated 'Bath 1878' lower left, The size being 36cm x 66cm, whilst overall the size is 74 cm x 44 cm .Housed within a gilt composition frame

In very good condition, the frame having some minor losses which have been regilded, signs of age as to be expected

John Charles Maggs (British 1819-1896)

was a painter best known for his coaching scenes. He has sometimes been referred to as John Maggs.

Born in London, England in 1819. He painted a series of famous coaching inns, and also a series of 80 metropolitan inns, in which he exploited the picturesque and historical aspect of his subject, to which his talent was best suited.
