Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian equestrian and sporting art gained popularity during the nineteenth century, focusing on horses, livestock, field sports, and country pursuits. Artists from this era emphasised anatomical precision and atmospheric rural landscapes reflecting British agrarian heritage.

Artists in this era primarily worked with oil pigments ground in natural drying oils, applied onto stretched linen canvas or solid timber panels. Works were typically finished with a protective coat of natural resin varnish, such as dammar or mastic.

Authenticity is evaluated through examination of wood or canvas ageing, surface craquelure patterns, brushwork technique, and signature details. Art historians also verify historical provenance, exhibition labels, and record entries.

A traditional sporting painting creates a focal point when placed above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a gallery wall arrangement. Pairing historical artwork with clean-lined contemporary furniture produces a balanced contrast in modern spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels away from direct sunlight and moisture. Dusting should only be performed lightly with a soft brush, while surface cleaning and varnish restoration must be executed by a professional art conservator.
