Fine Quality Late 19th Century French Display Case

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine quality French late 19th/early 20th century mahogany decorative display case of unusual design.

This display case consists of a top with two glass panels with brass moulding framing the glass and surrounded by a mahogany frame.

The top is hinged to allow for easy access to the interior of the case and has a clear glass shelf inside.

This leads down to a recessed mahogany panel surrounded by a brass moulding, this design being on both the front and sides of the piece.

The display case has two fine quality ormolu mounts at the top corners, leading down to two opening glazed doors, the glass again being frames by a brass moulding.

The interior has a mirror plate to the back, ideal for displaying items, glass sides and a red velvet fabric to the base - the fabric could easily be changed once purchased to a fabric of choice.

Underneath is a shaped frieze with a central ormolu mount leading down to four cabriole legs with ormolu mounts both at the top and also at the feet.

This case would be a superb addition for the displaying of luxury items for either a collector, shop or hotel.

This piece is in very good condition and is ready to go straight into a home etc.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Louis XV revival style, prominent in the late nineteenth century, is characterised by curved cabriole legs, asymmetrical rococo ornamentation, rich wood veneers, and elaborate gilt bronze mounts.

French vitrines were typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany or kingwood veneers, fitted with bevelled glass panels, lined with silk or velvet, and finished with chased ormolu or brass mounts.

Authentic pieces from this period feature hand-chased gilt bronze mounts, precision dovetail joinery, period-correct lock mechanisms, and original bevelled glass panes with evidence of natural aged patina.

A vitrine can serve as a focal point in a hallway, drawing room, or study, providing secure storage for curiosities while contrasting rich timber and metallic accents against contemporary minimalist backgrounds.

Dust the wooden surfaces and mounts regularly with a soft dry brush, apply bees wax to the timber sparingly while avoiding metalwork, and clean glass surfaces with a microfibre cloth and ammonia-free cleaner.
