Description

An attractive French mahogany vitrine with classical hand painted Vernis Martin panels. The variegated Carrera marble top above the ormolu mounted frieze. Below are 2 full length doors which open to a fabric lined interior with 3 shelves. The sides having concave glazed ends above Vernis Martin panels with further ormolu embellishments.The whole cabinet is raised on short cabriole legs terminating in ormolu sabots. Condition - Very good with no damage and complete with working lock & keys. Delivery to most of U.K. mainland £65.

Vernis Martin is a Japanese-style lacquer technique developed in 18th-century France by the Martin brothers. It was widely used on furniture, particularly vitrines and cabinets, featuring hand-painted pastoral scenes, gold dust finishes, and elaborate japanned ornamentation.

19th-century French vitrines were typically crafted using fine hardwoods such as kingwood, rosewood, or mahogany veneers over oak frames. They frequently incorporated shaped marble tops, gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, bowed glass panels, and silk or velvet interior linings.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature finely hand-painted panels rather than modern transfer prints, heavy cast ormolu mounts fixed with original screws, hand-bevelled or bowed glass, and authentic signs of age to the interior fabric and gilt lacquer work.
