Decorative 19th-century Vitrine Display Cabinet

19th century
Description

A highly decorative 19th-century vitrined display cabinet, of serpentine outline, richly ornamented with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts throughout.

The cabinet is constructed in a warm-toned hardwood, the shaped glazed door flanked by curved glazed side panels, all framed with fine gilt mouldings. The upper section is surmounted by an elaborate pierced and chased ormolu gallery, above a continuous band of scrolling foliate mounts, demonstrating confident mid-19th-century craftsmanship.

The lower panels are exquisitely decorated with hand-painted pastoral scenes, depicting elegant figures in a romantic landscape, framed within gilt borders. These painted panels add a strong narrative and visual richness, typical of Continental decorative furniture of the period.

Raised on gracefull shaped legs, each accented with applied ormolu mounts, the cabinet retains its deep red velvet interior, providing a luxurious backdrop ideal for the display of porcelain, objets d’art, or collectibles. The shaped marble top completes the piece with both durability and elegance.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Vernis Martin vitrine is a glazed French display cabinet featuring lacquer panels painted in the style of 18th-century artists such as Watteau or Fragonard, utilising a technique developed by the Martin brothers in 18th-century France.

These cabinets feature wood veneers such as mahogany or rosewood, cast ormolu (gilt bronze) mounts, curved glass panels, hand-painted lacquer lower panels, and velvet or silk interior linings.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-chased mercury-gilded bronze mounts, mouth-blown curved glass with slight thickness variations, painted artists signatures on lower panels, and traditional dovetail joinery.

Position the cabinet as a standalone focal piece against a neutral wall, utilizing the velvet-lined shelves to display collections of ceramics, modern glass, or art objects.

Dust the timber and gilt mounts regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, clean the glass with diluted water, and maintain stable indoor humidity to protect the painted varnish panels from cracking.
