Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Vernis Martin vitrine is a glazed display cabinet featuring decorative panels finished with a specific 18th-century French lacquering technique designed to imitate Asian lacquer, frequently depicting pastoral or romantic scenes. Popularised during the reign of Louis XV and revived in the late 19th century, these cabinets typically incorporate curved glass, marble tops, and gilded bronze mounts.

Craftspeople utilised fine hardwoods such as mahogany and rosewood for the main structure, accented with hand-painted lacquered panels. Additional primary components include cast ormolu (gilded bronze) mounts, shaped marble top slabs, and glass doors and side panels.

Authentic period examples display hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts with precise casting marks, naturally aged marble undersides with hand-cut tool marks, and hand-painted Vernis Martin artwork showing fine crazing under close examination. Frame joinery typically features hand-cut dovetails and pegged mortise-and-tenon joints.

Position the cabinet as a focal piece against a neutral wall, allowing its detailed gilded mounts and painted panels to stand out without visual competition. Inside the glazed section, display curated ceramics, glassware, or small sculpted objects arranged with ample spacing to avoid visual clutter.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuations in humidity to prevent wood warping or cracking of the painted varnish. Dust surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth, clean glass with dedicated cleaner applied directly to the cloth, and avoid applying water or chemical polishes to the hand-painted panels.
