George III Mahogany Serpentine Chest of Drawers

19th century
Description

A good large Georgian mahogany serpentine shaped chest of drawers dating to the late 18th century. With a pronounced serpentine-shaped front with serpentine-shaped sides and canted corners it has four long drawers all with cock beading, circular brass handles and locks. With a nicely shaped apron and feet inlaid with boxwood and ebony line decoration.

Overall a top quality example of it’s type with a beautiful grain and range of tones making this a lovely rich coloured and practical chest. It is in very good condition, there are small old scratches/nicks to the front of the top edge at the centre, and an old scratch on the right side of the second drawer. Unfortunately we do not have a key but all the drawers are unlocked. The inside of the top drawer is divided into three sections.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III serpentine chest of drawers is an eighteenth-century English storage cabinet constructed during the reign of King George III (17601820). It features a distinctive undulating front facade that bows outward in the centre and recedes at the sides.

Primary woods typically consist of solid or veneered Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its dense grain and rich tone. Secondary woods for drawer linings generally include oak or deal, accompanied by hand-cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, hand-sawn secondary timber on the back and undersides, and natural wood shrinkage along the grain. Locks, escutcheons, and drawer runners will show consistent historical wear and hand-tool marks.

Dark mahogany pieces provide substantial visual grounding against neutral plaster or off-white walls. Positioning modern abstract artwork or a minimalist mirror above the chest creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary design.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cotton cloth, buffing along the direction of the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources, radiators, and prolonged exposure to strong sunlight to prevent veneer splitting or timber movement.
