George III Style Mahogany Serpentine Chest of Drawers

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine George III style serpentine chest of drawers in richly figured mahogany, of elegant and balanced proportions. The bowed front is veneered in beautifully figured, bookmatched mahogany, creating a rich flame pattern across the drawer fronts, while the shaped top follows the serpentine line to enhance the refined profile.

The configuration comprises a single long top drawer, beneath which are two short drawers, followed by three graduated long drawers below. Each drawer retains brass swan-neck handles with decorative backplates and traditional key escutcheons, complementing the warm tone of the polished timber. A pull-out brushing slide is discreetly incorporated below the upper drawer tier, providing a practical additional surface.

The chest stands on shaped bracket feet and features a subtle scalloped apron that echoes the curvature of the façade. Oak-lined drawers and solid traditional construction reflect quality cabinetmaking throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III style furniture, originating in 18th-century Britain, is characterised by classical symmetry, refined proportions, elegant serpentine fronts, and the extensive use of high-quality mahogany.

These chests typically feature solid mahogany and mahogany veneers with dovetail drawer joints, oak secondary timbers, and cast brass swan-neck handle fittings.

Authentic design features include hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass backplates and handles, graduating drawer heights, flame mahogany veneer panels, and hand-planed back boards.

Position the chest against a neutral or dark accent wall, styled with a modern ceramic lamp, structured artwork, or a gilded wall mirror to balance historical detail with modern aesthetic elements.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid placement near direct radiator heat sources or unshaded sunlight, and apply natural beeswax polish twice yearly to preserve the timber finish.
