Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Originating in the 18th century during the Louis XV period, a bombe commode is characterised by its convex, outward-swelling front and side profiles. The style often incorporates serpentine shaping, elaborate rocaille scrollwork, cabriole legs, and a contoured marble top slab.

These commodes were typically framed in dense hardwoods such as oak or beech, featuring hand-carved decorative mouldings. Surfaces were coated in gesso and hand-painted, while the tops were fitted with heavy carved marble, such as Brocatelle or Sienna varieties.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed backboards, and irregular edge contours beneath the marble top slab. Signs of natural wood shrinkage and subtle paint craquelure over time also assist in verification.

A bombe commode serves as a focal piece in entryways, formal living areas, or master bedrooms. Designers balance its curvaceous profile by pairing it with simple contemporary artwork or a classic gilded mirror positioned directly above.

Dust the painted body regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding solvent-based cleaners that strip original finishes. Clean the marble top using a damp cloth with mild pH-neutral soap, drying immediately to prevent water spots.
