Description

Superb 19th-Century Victorian Burr Walnut Canterbury Sheet Music Magazine Rack

Brief Description:

This is a superb-quality 19th-century Victorian burr walnut Canterbury, dating to circa 1860–1880, and displaying exceptional craftsmanship, beautifully figured timbers and wonderfully intricate pierced fretwork decoration.

This highly decorative antique Canterbury features an elegant serpentine-shaped framework, richly figured burr walnut veneers and beautifully executed scrolling foliate fretwork panels, creating a striking and sophisticated example of Victorian cabinetmaking.

The upper section incorporates three open compartments, originally intended for storing sheet music, newspapers and periodicals, separated by polished wooden divisions and enclosed within an attractively shaped gallery.

The Canterbury is further embellished with beautifully turned corner columns, decorative finials and contrasting darker fretwork detailing, all combining to create an exceptionally attractive piece of period furniture.

Beneath the upper section is a useful full-width drawer, fitted with two turned wooden knobs, providing additional storage for smaller items.

The whole stands upon four elegantly turned supports, retaining its original ceramic castors, a particularly desirable feature.

The burr walnut displays magnificent natural figuring throughout, with beautiful variations in colour and grain that give the piece tremendous warmth, character and decorative appeal.

A Canterbury is a low, partitioned piece of furniture designed to hold sheet music, bound volumes, or periodicals, popularised in Britain during the 19th century.

Victorian Canterburys typically feature burr walnut veneers, intricate pierced fretwork dividers, turned support columns, a fitted base drawer, and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved fretwork, hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer casing, original brass or ceramic castors, and characteristic natural patination on the wood grain.

A Canterbury works well placed alongside a sofa or armchair as a magazine stand, or positioned near a reading desk to organize vinyl records and art books.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, and position the piece away from direct sunlight or severe heat sources.
