Delightful Antique Golden Victorian Oak Hallstand 1900

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A super quality and fine looking English golden oak hallstand with the added benefit of a trio of original tiles by Marsden Tiles which were produced in England in the late 19th and early 20th century by the Marsden Tile Company, founded by George Marsden after his earlier work in the Staffordshire pottery industry. The firm became known for its highly decorative wall and fireplace tiles, particularly those in the Art Nouveau style, featuring floral and organic motifs often finished in rich coloured glazes.

This hallstand sits well and it’s not only the tiles which are worthy of note, the lovely brass scalloped coat hooks are highly decorative, the hexagon bevelled frame around the oak mirror is super quality, both shaped rimed drip trays are in place, the tone of the solid oak, the pretty top cornice, useful drawer and the overall well proportioned attractive design.

It's in good historic order with wear in the right places but nothing off putting or nasty. We have carefully cleaned the piece to ensure it's ready for placing.

A delightful quality piece of English oak hall furniture c1900.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

Popularised during the Victorian era, hall stands were designed for entryways to receive guests outer garments, hats, and umbrellas. They served as both a practical storage solution for British homes and a decorative statement piece reflecting household status upon entry.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. They frequently incorporated brass coat hooks, silvered glass mirrors, cast iron drip trays, and glazed ceramic tiles.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut joinery, original brass hardware, bevelled or hand-cut mirror glass, and period ceramic tiles. Natural age patination on the timber further indicates authenticity.

Position the piece in a hallway or foyer as a functional focal point. Pair the warm timber tones with neutral wall colours or contemporary botanical wallpaper to balance historical character with modern aesthetics.

Clean timber surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth and nourish periodically with high-quality beeswax. Wipe brass fittings gently without harsh chemicals, and clean ceramic tiles and mirrors with a damp cloth to preserve original finishes.
