Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Satsuma pottery is a style of Japanese crackle-glazed earthenware that originated in the Satsuma province during the late sixteenth century. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it evolved to feature dense gilding, raised enamel decoration, and narrative scenes depicting figure subjects, deities, and dragons tailored for export markets.

Satsuma wares are crafted from a cream-coloured earthenware clay body finished with a finely crazed, translucent glaze. The surface embellishments utilize thick polychrome enamels, often applied using the moriage raised-relief technique, alongside extensive gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces generally display a distinct cream body with fine micro-crazing visible under the glaze, along with hand-applied gilding and enamelling. Base marks often include the Shimazu family cresta cross within a circlealongside the maker or workshop signature in Japanese kanji characters.

A pair of large Satsuma vases can be styled symmetrically on a sideboard, console table, or fireplace mantelpiece to create a striking focal point. Their warm gilding and complex polychrome palettes pair effectively with dark wood furniture, minimalist backdrops, or eclectic maximalist interiors.

Satsuma ceramics should be dusted gently using a clean, soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush. Water and chemical detergents should be avoided, as earthenware is porous and immersion can damage gilding, cold painted details, or delicate surface enamels.
