Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Charles II or Restoration period (16601685) in English furniture is characterised by a transition from utilitarian Jacobean forms to more decorative construction. Key features include the introduction of geometric panel mouldings on drawer fronts, applied turnings, brass drop handles, and the wider adoption of chest of drawers design over traditional coffer chests.

Seventeenth-century English chests were predominantly crafted from solid native oak, joined using traditional mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Drawers were typically side-hung on wooden runners embedded into the carcass sides, with hand-sawn drawer linings and heavy panelled construction throughout.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hewn oak timber displaying natural shrinkage lines, irregular saw marks on rear panels, and pegged joinery rather than modern screws or nails. Look for original side-runner grooves inside drawer sides, heavy timber gauge, hand-cut dovetails or lap joints, and age-appropriate oxidation on internal surfaces.

A dark oak chest provides visual weight and historical structure when contrasted against light, neutral wall shades in modern living spaces or bedrooms. Pairing the piece with simple contemporary lighting, minimalist ceramics, or modern artwork creates a curated contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean contemporary design.

Maintain solid oak by applying a thin layer of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber patina and prevent drying out. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources such as radiators and out of harsh direct sunlight to reduce timber movement, warping, and finish degradation.
