19th Century Pine Wall Shelves with Cupboard Antique Kitchen Rack

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A charming 19th-century pine wall-mounted cupboard with open shelves, retaining an attractive warm colour and wonderfully simple country-house character. Compact yet practical, it would work particularly well as kitchen or pantry storage, a bathroom cupboard, or as a decorative display piece.

The upper section comprises two graduated open shelves supported by ring-turned uprights and surmounted by turned finials. Below is a useful enclosed cupboard with a pair of panelled doors, all constructed in pine. A particularly appealing piece of vernacular storage furniture with a simple, understated appearance that would suit both period and contemporary interiors.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 83 cm

Width: 63 cm

Depth: 21.5 cm

CONDITION

The shelves are in good, solid antique condition with attractive colour and surface character.

There are marks, knocks, scratches and general wear commensurate with age and use, together with traces of old paint in places. The cupboard interior shows historic staining and wear. The internal shelf is absent, although the original grooves for supporting a shelf remain, making it straightforward for a replacement to be fitted if desired.

The doors and shelving remain sound and the age-related wear gives the piece an appealing, authentic country-house character.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, pine wall shelves and hanging cupboards were fundamental fixtures in British kitchens, larders, and sculleries. Often constructed by local joiners using European redwood or native pine, these utilitarian pieces provided accessible storage for daily tableware, spices, and household essentials.

Traditional 19th-century pine furniture was constructed using solid pine timber joined with hand-cut dovetails, mortise and tenon joints, and wooden dowels. Decorative elements such as turned spindles, urn finials, and hand-carved mouldings were typically created on manual lathes before being secured with animal-hide glue.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age including irregular saw marks on unpainted surfaces, hand-forged or early machine-cut iron hardware, naturally aged patina, and shrinkage gaps along wood panel joins. Original mounting plates or iron brackets on the reverse also indicate period construction.

Antique pine wall units bring warmth and texture to contemporary spaces when contrasted against neutral painted walls. They serve effectively in kitchens to display ceramic stoneware, in bathrooms for folded linens, or in hallways as functional storage for small items.

Clean pine surfaces using a soft dry cloth to remove dust, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners or chemical solvents. Apply a beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural grain to maintain moisture in the wood and protect the original patination.
