Grand Tour Bronzes of Sophocles and Demosthenes

19th century
For Sale by Cella
Description

A classic pairing of the Greek tragedian Sophocles (496-405BC), known as the Lateran Sophocles, and the Athenian statesman and orator Demosthenes (384-322BC), after the antique. These rare large size 19th century patinated bronze Grand Tour statues are both based on ancient Roman marble copies of Greek originals and are now housed in the Vatican Museums in Rome. Both classically dressed, depicted full figure, Sophocles with a basket of manuscripts and Demosthene holding a scroll. Each on integral bronze plinth base. Some wear to patination and signs of old retouching but otherwise a good quality pair.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour bronzes are 18th and 19th-century cast metal souvenir sculptures depicting figures from classical Antiquity, purchased by European travellers completing educational tours across Italy and Greece.

These figures were cast in solid bronze using the lost-wax process, featuring hand-chased surface details and finished with dark brown or patinated chemical coatings to emulate ancient archaeological finds.

Authentic period pieces display crisp definition in drapery folds, hand-tooled facial details, solid casting weight, natural surface oxidation patterns, and integral metal bases.

These classical figures function effectively on a dark wood library mantelpiece, sideboard top, or bookshelf to introduce historical texture and classical proportion to contemporary spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or horsehair brush, avoid liquid solvents, and apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the patination from environmental wear.
