In excellent original condition , the brightly gilded bodies with only minor wear commensurate with age and use .
Egyptian-inspired objects and decoration became highly fashionable in both England and France during the first quarter of the nineteenth century, influenced by the designers such as Thomas Hope and the re-discovery of the ancient world. A lead sphinx cast by John Cheere can be found at Lord Burlington’s Chiswick House , West London, together with further carved stone pairs within the gardens.
