Blue and white transferware is earthenware decorated using copper-plate tissue transfers to print cobalt blue designs onto the ceramic body prior to glazing, a process refined in 18th and 19th century Staffordshire, England.

These platters were formed from refined white earthenware or ironstone bodies, stamped or moulded with raised rim detailing, and coated in a clear lead glaze over underglaze printed cobalt pigment.

Authentic pieces often feature maker marks or pattern names printed or impressed on the underside, subtle transfer seams where the paper tissue overlapped, and characteristic crazing or glaze wear consistent with age.

A large transferware charger can be mounted on a wall in a dining space, displayed upright on a plate stand atop a sideboard, or placed in a traditional plate rack alongside complementary blue ceramics.

Clean transferware by hand using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding abrasive pads, dishwasher usage, or soaking, which can cause moisture absorption into porous earthenware micro-cracks.
