Transferware developed in 18th-century England as a process to replicate complex hand-painted motifs mechanically using copper engravings. By the 19th century, manufacturers produced wide volumes of blue and white tableware featuring romanticised oriental landscapes known as chinoiserie.

Victorian serving dishes were predominantly made from earthenware or pearlware coated in a lead glaze. The cobalt blue decoration was applied under glaze via tissue paper transfers printed from engraved copper plates before final firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit slight misalignments or seams in the printed pattern border, stilt marks on the underside from kiln firing, and natural crazing in the glaze consistent with age. Maker marks or impressed pattern names may also appear on the reverse.
