This ENGLISH BLUE & WHITE TRANSFER PRINTED SERVING PLATTER bears the impressed mark SPODE to the back and dates from circa 1820. It is decorated in their popular TOWER PATTERN, based on an engraving of the Bridge of Salaro.

The PLATTER is in good condition with no cracks, chips or restoration.

Spode perfected the blue underglaze transfer printing technique in Staffordshire during the late 18th century, allowing intricate engraved designs to be replicated on earthenware plates and platters. The Tower pattern, introduced around 1814, depicts an Italianate landscape featuring the Bridge of Salario near Rome.

Early 19th-century platters were typically made from refined earthenware or pearlware, coated with a clear lead glaze over cobalt blue oxide ink applied via tissue paper transfers.
