Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Georgian card tables were designed specifically for social gaming in private homes. They typically feature a hinged fold-over top that rotates or unfolds to support card playing while serving as a compact console table when closed.

These tables were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, valued for their durability and deep timber colour. The interiors often feature baize lining, while joints rely on hand-cut dovetails, wooden hinges, and brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, original brass hardware with aged patina, and natural shrinkage marks in the wood. Look for turned central pedestals, quadform bases, and hand-cut timber beneath the frame or drawer linings.

Position the table closed against a wall in an entryway or living space to serve as a console for lamps and decorative objects. Alternatively, place it in an empty alcove or behind a sofa to add warmth and historical contrast.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, warping, and finish fading.
