Victorian Figured Mahogany Turnover Top Card Table C.1860

19th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome Victorian figured mahogany fold-over card or tea table dating from the mid-19th century.

The rectangular top opens on a swivel action to reveal a generous playing surface, with a fitted frieze drawer beneath retaining a decorative paper lining. The richly figured mahogany is particularly attractive throughout, displaying well-matched flame figuring across both leaves of the top.

The table stands on an elegant turned baluster pedestal above a boldly carved quatreform base with scrolling cabriole legs terminating in carved scroll feet. The shaped frieze is richly carved with flowing acanthus scrolls centred by a finely carved cluster of grapes, giving the piece a particularly decorative appearance.

Both practical and decorative, it would serve equally well as a card table, lamp table, centre table or occasional table.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 80.5 cm

Width (closed): 99 cm

Depth (closed): 47 cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition consistent with age and use.

There are the expected marks, knocks and surface scratches associated with age. The figured mahogany has developed a warm, attractive colour and patina. There is a section of veneer loss to the right-hand side. The drawer retains a decorative paper lining, which shows age-related staining and wear.

The fold-over mechanism operates as intended, and the table is solid and structurally sound.

Overall, this is an attractive, well-proportioned Victorian table with particularly good quality carving and beautiful figured mahogany.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popular throughout the 19th century, a turnover top card table is a piece of accent furniture constructed with a swivel-and-fold hinged top that rotates ninety degrees before opening flat to double its surface area for board and card games.

Victorian card tables were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, frequently accented with flame veneers, cast brass hinges, turned pedestals, and woven baize fabric linings.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit hand-cut joinery, flush-mounted brass hinges with period slotted screws, a swivel storage well beneath the top, and natural wood oxidisation inside the internal compartment.

When folded shut, these versatile tables serve as elegant entryway console tables or side accent pieces in a living room, positioned against a wall to display contemporary ceramics, table lamps, or artwork.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and modern central heating radiators to prevent wood shrinkage and veneer splitting. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish annually along the direction of the grain.
