Description

Rare Regency Mahogany Fold-Over Card Table by Laver Oliver

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency card table is a piece of British furniture popularised during the early 19th century, designed for social card games. Featuring a hinged top that folds open to double the surface area, these tables served a dual purpose as decorative side tables when closed.

Regency card tables were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, often featuring flame veneers and solid timber legs. The tops frequently concealed interior baize lining, while the bases were fitted with brass caps and castors.

Authentic Regency card tables generally feature classical architectural influences, such as pedestal stems with four splayed sabre legs terminating in brass caps and castors. Examining the underside for original hand-dovetailed joints and age-appropriate wood shrinkage helps verify authenticity.

When closed, a Regency card table functions effectively as a hall console, side table, or accent piece positioned in an entryway or living room alcove. Styling the top with contemporary ceramics, table lamps, or framed artwork balances the historical timber with modern interior elements.

To preserve the finish, position the table away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer movement. Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year along the direction of the wood grain.
