Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire portrait figures are earthenware ornaments produced in Staffordshire, England, primarily during the 19th century. They frequently depict historical figures, literary characters, royalty, or folk subjects designed for display on domestic fireplace mantels.

These figures were typically press-moulded from earthenware clay, glazed with lead glazes, and finished with hand-painted enamel decoration. Many examples feature flat backs with minimal moulding to sit flush against wall surfaces.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often feature small firing release holes on the base, light weight due to hollow press-moulding, and natural glaze crazing. The enamel decoration often shows slight wear consistent with age, alongside visible mould seam lines.

A Staffordshire figure group can be displayed on a fireplace mantel, bookshelf, or sideboard as an accent piece. Combining traditional ceramics with modern art or contemporary furniture creates an engaging visual contrast within an eclectic interior.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry brush or a lightly dampened microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid immersing the item in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as these can damage cold-painted enamels and gilt details.
