Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Carlton House Desk

1900 - 1920
Description

Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Carlton House Desk with Satinwood Oval Panels & Green Leather Writing Surface

________________________________________

A superb Edwardian inlaid mahogany Carlton House desk, expertly crafted in the elegant Carlton House style and dating from the early 20th century. This distinguished desk combines exceptional craftsmanship with practical functionality, featuring a beautifully arranged superstructure of drawers and cupboards above a spacious green leather writing surface. There is a pierced brass gallery to the top.

The upper section is fitted with an attractive arrangement of small drawers flanked by curved cupboard doors, each decorated with striking oval satinwood panels. These satinwood ovals are repeated on the sides of the desk, creating a balanced and highly decorative design. The desk stands on elegant tapering legs terminating in brass castors and offers generous storage through its central frieze drawer and two additional side drawers.

Unlike many examples, this desk is fully polished on all sides, allowing it to be positioned freely within a room rather than against a wall. The rich mahogany grain, fine stringing and inlaid details are beautifully highlighted by the polished finish, making it an impressive centrepiece for a study, library, office or reception room.

A timeless piece of antique furniture, this Edwardian Carlton House desk offers both beauty and practicality, making it ideal for collectors, interior designers and those seeking a statement antique writing desk.

History of Carlton House Desks

The Carlton House desk takes its name from Carlton House, the London residence of the Prince of Wales, who later became King George IV. The design originated in the late 18th century and is widely associated with the renowned cabinet maker Thomas Sheraton.

Carlton House desks are characterised by their distinctive curved superstructure, which wraps around the rear of the writing surface and incorporates multiple drawers, compartments and cupboards within easy reach of the seated user. The design was intended to provide both elegance and efficiency, combining a writing table with extensive storage in a compact footprint.

Throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods, the Carlton House desk remained one of the most desirable forms of writing furniture. Edwardian makers continued to produce these desks using fine mahogany, satinwood and decorative inlays, preserving the refined proportions and sophisticated appearance that have made the design popular for over two centuries.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed in the late 18th century, a Carlton House desk features a U-shaped superstructure wrapping around the back and sides of a writing surface, housing small drawers, cupboards, and secret compartments.

These desks were predominantly crafted from mahogany, often featuring satinwood crossbanding, boxwood or ebony stringing, cast brass gallery rails, and gilt-tooled leather writing inserts.

Authentic Edwardian examples exhibit precise satinwood marquetry, brass drop handles, hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, and square tapered legs resting on original brass castors.

Position the desk in a dedicated home office or library setting, balancing its polished mahogany timber and classic profile with modern lighting and understated contemporary seating.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and heat radiators, apply high-quality beeswax regularly along the grain, and clean the leather writing insert using dedicated leather care products.
