18th century
Description

are Late 17th Century William & Mary Walnut Chest of Drawers

An exceptionally rare and absolutely remarkable late 17th-century William and Mary period walnut chest of drawers, dating from circa 1690. Handcrafted more than three hundred years ago, this piece is a magnificent surviving example of early British cabinet making and represents a vanishingly rare opportunity for the discerning collector or interior designer.

Very rarely do chests of this exceptional caliber, condition, and striking decorative detail come onto the open market.

Design & Craftsmanship

The chest is a true thing of beauty, showcasing the masterful artistry of the William and Mary era. The drawer fronts feature exquisitely figured walnut veneers, carefully chosen for their rich, dramatic grain pattern. Each drawer is framed by a highly unusual and intricate geometric herringbone string inlay design, adding immense visual depth and architectural interest to the facade.

The chest retains its classic configuration of two short over three long graduated drawers, all running smoothly. It is adorned with elegant, period-correct cast brass teardrop handles and elaborately chased escutcheons that complement the rich warm tones of the walnut beautifully.

Materials & Construction

The Top: A magnificent, substantial solid walnut top displaying incredible patination, depth of color, and character earned over three centuries of use.

The Sides: Constructed with traditional, robust paneled sides, an authentic early feature that speaks to its structural integrity and age.

The Feet: The chest stands proudly on its original-style, substantial solid walnut turned bun feet, giving it the perfect historic stance and silhouette.

The Drawers: A look at the drawer construction reveals classic early hand-cut dovetails, thick oak linings, and original-style underside construction, highlighting the uncompromising, honest craftsmanship of the period.

Condition Report

This chest is in remarkable antique condition for an item of its great age. It boasts a wonderful, deep honey-amber patina throughout the walnut. Having been sympathetically cared for, it retains its structural integrity, stability, and historic charm. Naturally, it features minor historic marks, surface wear, and age-related restorations consistent with a piece crafted in the late 1600s, all of which only enhance its authentic character and provenance.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late seventeenth-century Britain during the joint reign of William III and Mary II (16891702), this style is recognised by its lightened proportions, ornate walnut veneers, geometric marquetry, turned legs, and compressed bun feet.

Chests from this era were primarily constructed using native oak or pine for the internal carcass, overlaid with highly figured walnut or olivewood veneers, and trimmed with brass teardrop handles and decorative keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn dovetail joints on the drawer linings, thick-cut surface veneers, original iron locks, and characteristic featherbanding or crossbanding around the drawer edges.

A period walnut chest acts as a warm, tactile focal point when set against clean contemporary walls, pairing comfortably with modern artwork, minimalist ceramics, or natural stone accents.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood veneer. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration.
